The Red Coast Running Tour it’s like running in Mars surface… a completely different scenery from the rest of the island.
You start this tour running 3km flat along a levada on the hills of Machico city before slightly climbing up to the northern coast at Boca do Risco, where you start having some stunning views te northeast side of the island.
From this point, as you go up you start to have an increasingly spectacular view to the different tones of the red coast that makes you imagine running on Mars surface.
After 8km you start running down till the fishing village of Caniçal where you’ll run a bit by the sea level before starting the second uphill of the day this time by the southern coast.
This uphill has some runnable sections while you approach Machico city again to finish the tour by running on a secondary levada.

This tours is not recommended for runners with hard vertigo since we have some exposed sections on the north coast.
If you just want to run on a different trail on the northern coast you might have a look at Larano Coastal Cliffs Running Tour. You have also one other tour on this side of the island, try the Eastern Peninsula Running Tour.
