25 Fountains and Risco – Tour Description

25 Fountains and Risco walking tours takes you through one of the most popular hikes in Madeira Island.

This tour starts in the mountains of Calheta on the south side, where you will walk about 800m surrounded by huge eucalyptus with some views to the south side.

Then you’ll cross a 800m tunnel crossing to the north side of the same mountain where you reach into a completely different landscape, the laurissilva forest.

On Rabaçal valley you will walk through 2 different levadas, the 25 Fountains (25 Fontes) levada, and the Risco levada. Both bring water form the main river to power production and irrigation.

Once you reach 25 Fountains waterfalls, we recommend you a short stop to enjoy the place and the sounds of the nature. Then it’s time to visit the Risco waterfall, the biggest in the area.

Before we get back to where we started, you have the chance to stop by a local and cozy coffee shop to have a rest and drink or eat something if you want (not included).

Additional Information

The tour is 10km long and it takes approximately 3 hours to do it. The terrain is made of dirt, sometimes muddy, and rocks and roots. It also have some steps.

In this tour you experience how great and relaxing it is to walk on a Levada surrounded by green and humid native forest and stunning views to the mountains.

We consider this tour for intermediate fitness level (3 out of 5) mostly because of the steps, and slippery when wet.

If you suffer from claustrophobia this may not be the best tour from you because we cross a long tunnel twice.
