The Central Massif – Tour Description
The Central Massif running tour is a journey through the central mountain range of Madeira Island, passing through the picturesque village of Curral das Freiras.
This running tour starts at Encumeada, a central place that splits the western plateau from the eastern mountain range. The first easy 5 km are a good warm up for what’s coming next.
After passing by the farms of Curral Jangão, you start adding some elevation gain up in the mountain, but always with some runnable sections.
After this uphill, you have a steep and technical downhill trail taking you to the village of Curral das Freiras.
Leaving the village you have a long big uphill and you will pass by some of the highest mountains of the island like Pico Casado and Pico Grande.
Approaching the finish point, you start having some views both to the north and the south mountains of the central massif.
The last section is mostly made of steps down, so hold on your knees.
