Folhadal Hidden Treasures Running Tour

In this running experience we travel deep inside the Laurissilva forest far away from the civilization and we’ll discover some of the Folhadal hidden treasures these mountains have.

We start by running flat in a Levada, and we’ll cross 2 tunnels (500m and 800m). We will see on the way some big and smaller waterfalls and we’ll feel the humidity of this forest.

You will find along the way some Laurels (laurus novocanariensis and ocotea foetens) that make this forest unique and if we’re lucky we can find the Trocaz Pigeon (columba trocaz) that lives in this humid forest.

On the second part of the tour, we will push hard by climbing hundreds of steps to have an open view to São Vicente mountains from the top till the ocean on the north side.

The last 3 km are in the road relaxing downwards to the starting point while enjoying the view.

This track is 18km long with around 700m elevation gain/loss. The ground is mainly made by dirt, roots, rocks and concrete (levadas), and asphalt (road).

We’ll go deep inside the Laurissilva forest far away from the civilization and we’ll discover some of the Folhadal hidden treasures these mountains have.

You’ll experience running in a Levada, crossing tunnels and great waterfalls. To finish this tour in beauty we have a clear view to the mountains.

Part of this track is used by MIUT – Madeira Island Ultra Trail race.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a shared tour with other guests. Your running pace might be different than the other participants during the tour, therefore we will ask you to be comprehensive and avoid moving away from the group.
