Levada do Rei Walking Tour – Tour Description

Levada do Rei walking tour is the right choice if you want to have an introduction of levada walking and laurissilva forest.

This tour starts in the village of São Jorge, a small parish of Santana in the north side of Madeira.

You’ll start by leaving the village outskirts still with some exotic trees like Blue Gum (or Eucalyptus) and Black Wattle for the first 2km.

Once you keep going deeper inside the valley you start entering the Laurissilva forest area with some endemic species like the Canary Laurels and the Lilly-of-the-Valley Tree.

Approaching Ribeiro Bonito (Beautiful River), the origin of the levada, you have to pass behind a waterfall. In the hot days of summer is refreshing, but in the winter it feels cold getting some drops. You should bring some cover.

After 5,4km once you reach the river, you have some time to enjoy this peaceful place and eat some snack before going back to the start by the same trail.

Additional Information

The tour is 11km long and it takes approximately 3,5 hours to do it. The terrain is made of dirt, sometimes muddy, and concrete in some parts of the sidewalk of the levada.

We consider this tour for beginner fitness level (1 out of 5). This is a flat walk all the way. All the highest parts of the trail are well protected by a hand rail.
